The Evolution of Training: My Journey and Vision for Loopin

Over my 16-year career across diverse fields such as the military, sports, and the corporate world, I've dedicated myself to the development and delivery of training programs. From preparing recruits for combat to aiding England Football in their pursuit of glory, and enhancing leadership and team performance in multinational corporations like HSBC, Meta, and Audi, my experiences have given me a comprehensive view of the training landscape—the effective, the ineffective, and everything in between.

Confronting the Challenges of Workplace Training

The transition to business training revealed stark realities about the difficulty of fostering real change within workplace environments. Despite the universal constraints of time, resources, and finances that businesses grapple with, a deeper issue lies in the actual impact of training. The economic equation of balancing cost against the duration and type of training offered, from short talks to extensive coaching programs, is straightforward. However, the effectiveness of such training in genuinely improving performance presents a complex challenge. This dilemma is underscored by the reality that even the most inspiring talks, such as Simon Sinek's 'Start With Why', require time, repetition, and wide exposure to instill lasting change.

The Forgetting Curve: A Stubborn Adversary

The insidious nature of the forgetting curve exacerbates the challenge, with studies showing that half of the new information is forgotten within an hour, and a staggering 90% lost within a week. This rapid erosion of knowledge renders most training interventions, especially those constrained by budget, essentially futile in effecting long-term performance improvements.

The Limitations of Generic Training Approaches

My personal frustration, and a widespread issue in training, is the predominance of generic, one-size-fits-all approaches. Workshops on leadership, burnout, or performance might cover relevant topics, but they often fail to resonate on a personal level with each participant. This lack of personalisation leads to a minimal impact where it matters most: in the real-life application of the training to specific challenges faced by individuals in their unique roles.
